Hormonal Balance & Emotional Support with Essential oils

6 min read

Hormonal fluctuations and the resulting emotional imbalances can significantly impact daily well-being, contributing to stress, anxiety, and tension. Aromatherapy offers a gentle, non-invasive approach to supporting hormonal and emotional health by leveraging the therapeutic properties of essential oils. I formulated a blend called Hormonal Balance & Emotional Support that promotes mental clarity, emotional equilibrium, and nervous system regulation. This paper explores the therapeutic reasoning, clinical evidence, and aromatic considerations behind each essential oil, as well as the rationale for the inhalation method, providing an understanding of how this blend supports emotional and hormonal wellness.

The essential oils included in this Aromastick blend are sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata), neroli (Citrus aurantium (L) var. amara), and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), all have documented therapeutic properties that support hormonal balance, anxiety reduction, and stress relief.

Sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) is well-known for its uplifting and mood-enhancing effects. Briskey et al. (2022) demonstrated that standardized blood orange extracts not only support weight management but also positively influence metabolic and hormonal pathways, suggesting broader systemic benefits beyond simple aromatherapy. Its bright citrus aroma can promote mental clarity and emotional uplift, complementing interventions aimed at reducing stress and anxiety.

Neroli (Citrus aurantium (L) var. amara) has been studied for its impact on menopausal symptoms and emotional well-being. Inhalation of neroli essential oil significantly reduced stress and improved subjective menopausal symptoms, including tension and irritability, in postmenopausal women (Choi et al., 2014). These findings support its use in aromatherapy for hormonal balance, as it can help alleviate anxiety and stress associated with hormonal fluctuations.

Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata) demonstrates anxiolytic effects when used in clinical settings. Sriboonlert et al. (2023) found that aromatherapy with Cananga odorata significantly reduced anxiety in patients undergoing interventional neuroradiology procedures, highlighting its effectiveness in calming the nervous system and promoting emotional stability. These findings highlight why it is an essential part of a blend aimed at promoting hormonal and emotional well-being.

Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) has been shown to support relaxation and antioxidant status. Tvarijonaviciute et al. (2018) observed improvements in salivary antioxidant markers and clinical outcomes during chamomile treatment, indicating its capacity to support physiological calm and mitigate stress-related oxidative effects. Its gentle, herbaceous aroma further reinforces the calming and grounding aspects of the blend.

Overall, the combination of these essential oils offers a synergistic approach to managing hormone-related stress, anxiety, and tension. Each essential oil offers unique therapeutic and aromatic properties: Sweet Orange is energy-boosting, Neroli is mood-regulating, Ylang Ylang is deeply calming, and Roman Chamomile is gently soothing and physiologically supportive.

From a perfumery perspective, the blend is peppered with sweet orange, providing a bright, sunny top note that brings a sense of freshness, optimism, and clarity. The heart of the blend, composed of neroli and ylang-ylang, offers a tender, balancing floral core with smooth richness, emotional depth, and a subtle sensuality. Roman Chamomile adds a soft, calming base note to the blend, solidifying the overall aroma and creating a tranquil olfactory profile.

The Aromastick inhalation method is particularly effective because inhalation delivers essential oil molecules directly to the olfactory system, where they can influence emotional and physiological responses through the limbic system. In a randomized controlled trial, lavender essential oil inhalation significantly reduced depression scores and improved sleep quality in stroke patients, suggesting its potential as a non-invasive, supportive intervention for emotional regulation and rest (Yin et al., 2024). Aromasticks offer practical advantages: they are portable, discreet, and provide a controlled dose, allowing the scent to serve as a personal anchor or grounding cue. This method creates a familiar mental association with calmness, enhancing the emotional effectiveness of the blend.

Safety considerations are integral to the formulation. Users should avoid direct skin contact with undiluted oils and monitor exposure to prevent headaches or nausea. All oils should be high-quality, pure, and sourced from reputable suppliers. Ylang-Ylang should be used cautiously due to potential skin sensitivity and contraindications in pregnancy or anticoagulant use, while neroli, sweet orange, and Roman chamomile are generally safe, but should still be introduced in small amounts first to observe any idiosyncratic reactions.

In developing this blend, several key lessons were learned. Synergy is essential, with each oil contributing complementary profiles—sweet orange for bright citrus clarity, neroli, and ylang-ylang for floral balance and depth, and Roman chamomile for grounding calm. Scientific anchoring ensures clinical support for anxiety relief, enhancing both efficacy and professional credibility. What's more, the scent itself acts as an emotional cue, making the inhalation tool a personalized anchor when used consistently. Overall, this blend is a thoughtful integration of botanical empathy, clinical grounding, and aromatic finesse, designed to support hormonal and energetic balance with elegance, safety, and a clear emotional narrative.

I crafted this blend as a dynamic duo—bright and balancing for daytime energy, yet soothing and restorative for evening calm. Four essential oils, two distinct blends—crafted in different ratios to keep you balanced from morning to night.

Daytime Clarity: Hormonal Harmony + Mental Clarity

Total: 15 drops

  • Sweet Orange – 7 drops

  • Neroli – 4 drops

  • Ylang Ylang – 2 drops

  • Roman Chamomile – 2 drops

This blend works because its citrus-heavy profile, featuring sweet orange and neroli, promotes mental clarity and elevates mood, acting as an emotional “pick-me-up.” Neroli adds an elegant balance, helping to mitigate anxiety while enhancing the bright, uplifting qualities of the sweet orange. A touch of ylang-ylang and Roman chamomile softens the rich notes of citrus, creating a blend that is both invigorating and mood-stabilizing, making it an ideal companion for morning or daytime use. There are a total of 15 drops in the inhaler, with the proportions carefully designed so that sweet orange dominates the top notes, while the other oils provide harmonious middle and base notes. This ensures a well-rounded olfactory profile that is safe for repeated daytime inhalation and minimizes the risk of overstimulation or headache.

Evening Calm – Hormonal Balance + Nervous System Soothing

Total: 15 drops

  • Sweet Orange – 3 drops

  • Neroli – 4 drops

  • Ylang Ylang – 5 drops

·       Roman Chamomile – 3 drops

This blend works by emphasizing a richer floral heart, with Ylang Ylang and neroli taking center stage to encourage relaxation and emotional balance, making it ideal for evening use or pre-sleep routines. Ylang Ylang gently slows the nervous system, while Roman chamomile provides a grounding, calming effect. Neroli threads through the blend to maintain a subtle emotional uplift, preventing it from feeling heavy or overly sedating, and ensuring a soothing yet clear-headed relaxation. The 15-drop total maintains a safe concentration for inhaler use, making the blend potent enough for stress relief but subtle enough to avoid sensory overload or nausea. The proportions are carefully designed to shift the aromatic profile from the bright, citrus-dominant energy of daytime blends to a floral-heavy evening calm, reflecting both therapeutic intention and perfumery balance.

Below is a comparison table that shows how different the same four essential oils can perform given their blend ratio. It also gives the experience of the perfumery notes as these turned out quite lovely.
